Is it just me or is Roxanne not better off without old Cyrano? Oh he's romantic, poetic, faithful and loyal: yes, all those things. But after 15 years and a bang on the head from a large block of wood when he finally lets slip that he wrote and spoke the words she fell in love with, is he really interested in whether she actually loved him back or not?
On last night's most excellent and enjoyable performance at the Royal Exchange I'd say not. For me Cyrano was more in love with love than in love with Roxanne and far more in love with his words and their purity than with any real prospect of love, marriage and togetherness. The nose was just an excuse.
