The Reader

I'm sorry to leave behind my reading group in Blighty, not least as we have now notched up 20 titles that we have all (give or take the odd miss) read. We scored the first ten on April 25th 2006 (oh my God - more than two years ago) and now here are the scores, out of five, for the next bunch.

In Cold Blood, Truman Capote 3
The Sea, John Banville -2ish
Just Like Tommorow, Faize Guene 3
Kim, Rudyard Kipling 3
Restless, William Boyd 3
The Girl in the Picture, Denise Chong 0
Neverwhere, Neil Gaiman 4
Darkmans, Nicola Barker 3
Kafka on the Shore, Hanuki Murikami 3
The Keutzer Sonata, Leo Tolstoy 3

I think it would be fair to say that Neverwhere was the most popular read with Kim and Kafka on the Shore (my fav) also scoring highly but not so evenly liked across the group. And the two worst were very obviously The Sea and The Girl in the Picture. The Girl in the Picture could have, perhaps should, have been a really interesting read - but it was boring and poorly written. And The Sea? Well never before have we given anything minus points. Obviously a Booker Prize winner then.

I went to a reading/Q&A by Neil Gaiman last week, promoting The Graveyard Book. He was excellent.

I did have to explain who he is to your mother, though.

That'll be one to Alan and 999,999,999 to me then.
