The monsters and the critics and other essays

It isn't every day a literary title matches up so precisely with how we spend a Sunday afternoon. But yesterday we took the kids on the GO train into Toronto and took the Skywalk-thingy to the Rogers Centre to see the Monster Jam. It was very, very, very noisy. In fact it was a bit touch and go and looked like it might be a total, tear-flooded, far too scary for seven and six year olds (never mind the three year old) disaster but - whew - in the end they loved it. So obviously the trucks were the monsters and we were the critics. The little critics were happy and the bigger critics were happy they were happy. My personal highlights were the two ticket touts effing and jeffing outside the stadium - a minor patch war I think - and the almost incoherently drunk man with a bicycle I sat next to on the train home.
