Last night we went to see Mirandolina at the Royal Exchange. It was a really frothy and light theatrical experience: a comic battle of the sexes performed with lots of oomph and panache. The cast were really good and included Matthew Kelly and Racquel Cassidy who was Susan in the first two series of Teachers. Chris visibly relaxed into it after a long day at work and a two minute pit stop at home before setting off into Manchester. He enjoyed it so much that even the singing and dancing didn't put him off. I was impressed by the raised dome in the floor, the rain, the live musicians and the spiral staircase which made first floor entrances and exits possible. I don't think the accent police made any complaints either - although at least one Irish accent, one Welsh accent and a bit of an Essex girl, in a play set in Mussolini's Italy could have given them something to talk about... if they hadn't been enjoying it all quite so much. Perhaps the sexual politics and class commentary should have given it a bit more of an edge, but it was very entertaining - and that is, after all, what we went for.
