Yesterday we experienced our first "Spirit Day" at our new school. This involves nearly everybody wearing a really loud orange and red tie dye tee-shirt and being enthusiastic about it. They do this once a month and each month there is a theme - this month's was Friendship. The friendliest kids in each class get a certificate and, as Dominic was one of those chosen by his teacher, Chris and I got to go and see him hug the Husky.
Yes - the Husky. The school has a mascot who appears at these assemblies to tumultuous applause and hugs and high fives all the kids. There was a very strong ra-ra-ra element to the event. The teachers were cheered loudly, the kids cheered each other loudly and at the end ten kids got to hold up the letters making the school name and they did the whole "Give me a P etc... PLAYAWAY" thing.
It was many things this assembly, but most of all it was unlike any assembly Chris and I have ever been too. It was jolly. It was happy. For miserable sarcastic fellows like us it was a bit scary too, but in a good way. The picture shows Dominic leaving the embrace of said Husky. He looked a bit reluctant about that part but otherwise, this new school is getting a big thumbs up from all the little Braithwaites.
