With one thing or another I have had a bit of time to play around with computers. Basically this is something that I haven't managed to do for a few years really. It started when I decided to rebuild an old laptop that I had lying around. While doing that I noticed that it is very difficult to recover all the license keys that you need for Windows based software. Obviously it wasn't a priority for me to re-invest with Bill Gates. Despite this being a laptop thing I decided to play around with Linux. After some research I decided to try Ubuntu. Talk about plug and play. Yes, I didn't select the correct installation CD to start with but once I found the one that gave you a text install it was plain sailing. My seven year old Toshiba Tecra now has a new lease of life with a great operating system with everything built in. I do understand the limitations of what I have done and know we will still need windows machines for cameras and games but this is cheap web browsing. I have even got WiFi working.

Have you tried out your old unix-hacking ways yet? Ps -aux and all that? I just re-built my PC and was tempted to LINUX but wasn't courageous enough... maybe next time
